Rehabilitation

Summary

Our Rehabilitation complex has 10 rehabilitation specialists, 36 physical therapists, 28 occupational therapists, 14 speech pathologists and 3 rehabilitation engineers. Through excellent teamwork, we provide rehabilitation for patients with cerebrovascular accident, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, or orthopedic disease. We usually have about 140 patients in two comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation wards and a conventional rehabilitation ward. In comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation wards, we provide three-hour (maximum) training a day to patients. It's the only university hospital with a department of rehabilitation medicine in Mie Prefecture. We apply the latest methods and techniques in the practice of rehabilitation medical treatment, research and development. We also cooperate with Fujita Memorial Nanakuri Institute, Fujita Health University.
The Full-time Integrated Treatment program we have developed since 2000 is being practiced in our university hospital. The FIT program achieves the first "high-density and integrated rehabilitation ward" in Japan.
Our dedication and our intensive training are what we consider as the best way to treat patients and make it possible for them to leave the hospital earlier.

Rehabilitation Features

Implementation of an evidence-based rehabilitation medicine

Activities of daily living in patients (such as dressing, grooming, and bathing) are assessed every 2 weeks. Problems of patients are clearly identified and contents and procedures of treatment are improved. The results from the assessment are relayed to the treatment team every quarter of the year for consideration of proper and efficient treatment methods. Parts of the results of our work are published for our country as well as the rest of the world to contribute to the progress of rehabilitation.

Accomplishments: Research and Educational Activities

Our hospital actively engages in educational activities on rehabilitation medicine for continues improvement of rehabilitation staff. Since 2000, we have conducted the Nanakuri rehabilitation seminars for medical experts 90 times. In addition, we led a stroke rehabilitation function cooperation project and worked on rehabilitation enlightenment in Tsu City. Our staff keep the posts of Kaifukuki Rehabilitation Ward Association: a vice-president, a representative of the therapist committee of this association, a nursing care committee and a PR committee. We are the leading institution in the field of rehabilitation in Japan.

Various treatments for rehabilitation

Our facilitation method includes electrical stimulation and robotics training which are embraced in addition to muscle strength reinforcement practice and daily life practice performed in the past. An example of a development in our practice is the utilization of an upper limb robot of MIT (InMotion) which was introduced in 2013. Recently, a cooperative project with TOYOTA has been initiated, and the robot is expected to be utilized as a core treatment in rehabilitation in the near future.

Reinforcement of cooperation and follow-up after leaving the hospital (life at home)

We contrived "The hospital-community linkage sheet" and record the outline of the rehabilitation while a patient is admitted to hospital. Community-based rehabilitation projects are developed using this sheet. A case conference of an outpatient is held with the rehabilitation staff in community-based rehabilitation. The cooperation of the medical staff is strengthened through this project making sure that patients who leave this hospital are followed up. From the time patients leave the hospital, we keep in touch to make sure patients are able to live a normal life at home.
